General information on Vitebsk

Vitebsk is a city in the north-east of the Republic of Belarus, the administrative center of the Vitebsk region (population – 347.5 thousand people (2009), area – 96 km²).
Located in the eastern part of Belarus on the Western Dvina River, 272 km away from Minsk, Vitebsk is a major transportation hub, industrial and cultural center of the north of Belarus, the second oldest city in the country.
Vitebsk emerged on the picturesque steep banks of the Western Dvina River and the Vitba River, in the middle of the ancient trade route “from the Varangians to the Greeks”.
Modern Vitebsk is one of the largest industrial centers of the Republic, a city with a highly developed industry, science and culture. The city’s streets and squares are impressive with a great variety of monuments of architecture and environmental art.

The Vitebsk land is rich in historical and cultural traditions, which today receive their new birth and further development. Among main touristic attractions are the building of the former Town Hall, the Roman Catholic Church of St. Barbara, the St. Basil’s Cathedral, the Church of the Annunciation, the Assumption Cathedral, the Holy Resurrection Church and the 18th century monument of architecture “Labazy”, the Art Centre of Marc Chagall, the Summer Amphitheatre. The city has gone down in history as one of the main centers of artistic avant-garde. This is a home city of the world-famous painter Marc Shagall.
The most memorable event, a kind of city’s visiting card, is the International Festival of Arts “Slavianski Bazaar in Vitebsk”, that is being conducted in the period from 09-17 of July, 2019. The main Festival’s venue is “The Summer Amphitheatre”.

National currency is Belarusian Ruble.

Visa-Free travel in Belarus

According to the Presidential Decree, effective from July 27, 2018, foreign citizens of 74 countries can enter Belarus for up to 30 days and exit from the territory of Belarus only through the State border checkpoint of the Republic of Belarus “Minsk National Airport”.

To enter the Republic of Belarus in the visa-free regime, foreign citizens should have the following documents:

– a valid ordinary passport (at least 90 days beyond intended date of departure from the Republic of Belarus);

– financial means;

– a medical insurance policy with coverage for at least 10 000 euros, valid in Belarus during the whole duration of stay.

But in case you arrive in Belarus via Vitebsk Vostochny airport the entry visa is required:

C – short-term visa, valid for up to 90 days;

To obtain an entry visa, the following documents should be submitted to an entry visa issuing authority (Visa-consular department of Belarus):

  • one copy of a duly completed visa application form*;

Stadium of FC Vitebsk (Vitebsky Central Sport Complex)

Vitebsky Central Sport Complex (also known as Vitebsky CSK in short) is a multi-purpose sports complex in Vitebsk, Belarus. It is currently used mostly for football matches and is the home ground of FC Vitebsk. The stadium’s capacity is 8,144 people. Stadium complex includes the following facilities: main arena with natural grass surface; football stadium with artificial turf pitch; 2 training pitches with natural grass surface.

The stadium was built in 1937 and was originally known as Dinamo Stadium. In 1950, it was rebuilt after damages sustained during World War II. During 1980–1986 it was gradually renovated without closing.

In 1998, the stadium was closed for a major renovation. It started hosting matches again only three years later, in 2001. In 2002 it was chosen to host a final match of 2001–02 Belarusian Cup.

In 2003 most of the renovation works were completed and the arena was renamed to Vitebsky Central Sport Complex.

The stadium hosted occasional home games of Belarus national under-21 team. In 2005, it hosted Belarus national team’s friendly match against Latvia. It also was used by Naftan Novopolotsk as a home venue in UEFA Europa League qualifiers in 2009 and 2012.
